Description

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd is a state owned and controlled nonprofit limited liability company established by law and operating under the ownership steering of the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy. VTT is impactdriven and from its wide multi-technological knowledge base, VTT can combine different technologies, produce information, upgrade technology knowledge, and create business intelligence and added value for its stakeholders. VTT has a staff of 2400 and turnover 258 M€ (2017). VTT receives approximately one third of its total income directly from the Finnish government. This allows VTT to carry out the high-risk strategic research and to invest in research and technology infrastructures, which are necessary to generate the knowledge and know-how required for fulfilling VTT’s public mandate.

VTT has a long and vast experience in EU projects under different funding programmes and other frameworks (also PPPs, EITs, EIPs, etc.). On average, the share of industry partners was 48% in those consortia where VTT was engaged in FP7. In 2017, VTT was involved in 404 EU-funded research projects (218 within H2020). Ranked among the leading European RTOs, VTT is committed to responsible collaboration for achieving the Europe 2020 goals by networking with Finnish and European actors in the global context.

VTT fuel cell and hydrogen research supports industry product development by maintaining a development platform comprising of a large selection of research facilities, a selection of developed modelling tools and knowhow encompassing different technologies throughout the entire business chain. The main research areas today are PEMFC and SOFC, including systems, applications, demonstrations, stacks, components, and materials. The purpose of the SOFC research at VTT is to develop new technology and to provide information for industrial enterprises in order to support development work on SOFC-based power plants. It also supports the development of stacks, development of balance of plant (BOP) components, and application of SOFC power plants. One purpose is also to increase the understanding of the fundamentals of SOFC science and systems. VTT is a member of N.ERGHY Research Grouping.

The research team ship and arctic technology performs research related to ship hydrodynamics, i.e. model tests, numerical simulations and ship simulator. Full-scale investigations include sea trials in open water and ice conditions, load and vibration measurements, passenger comfort investigations, lifetime estimations and onboard and underwater noise measurements. LCA studies and research related environmental aspects of shipping are conducted frequently for different ships, engines and fuels.

H2020-EU.3.4. - Societal Challenges (GA 861647)

Nautilus project will develop an integrated marine energy system that will use liquefied natural gas. The project will build a pilot technology that will gradually replace the internal combustion engine-based generators with a solid oxide fuel cell-battery hybrid genset. What is more, Nautilus will work on a digital design and a demonstrator of an on-board energy system for vessels transporting 1000 and more than 5 000 passengers, which will be evaluated according to the marine safety regulations.
