The Context

The maritime sector’s share of greenhouse gas emissions continues to grow, being a challenge that must be addressed to align with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) new strategy for reducing GHG emissions from ships, adopted in July 2023. This effort is crucial to achieving overall environmental goals at both the EU and international levels.

In this context, hydrogen is considered a promising energy vector to support the decarbonization of the maritime industry. However, several challenges related to its technical, regulatory, commercial and economic implementation remain unresolved.

The e-SHyPS project aims to define new guidelines for the effective introduction of hydrogen in the maritime passenger transport sector. Engaged in the development of a regulatory framework, and through its standardization plan and adoption roadmap, e-SHyPS stands at the forefront of the development of hydrogen-based alternative fuels for waterborne transport.

The Event

Therefore, e-SHyPS is pleased to organize the Policy Workshop: “Hydrogen as Maritime Fuel: Defining New Guidelines for a Sustainable Future”, scheduled on 27th May, Brussels, Management Centre and Meeting Centre CEN/CENELEC (Rue de la Science 23 (1040 Brussels)).

During the event, the project’s progress and innovations will be presented, with a special focus on best practices and use cases related to the implementation of H2 systems on passenger ships.

The event’s scope is to support market operators from both standardization and policy perspectives, fostering alignment between companies and policymakers regarding barriers and challenges to be overcome. The event aims to create a system of experiences shared by companies and research projects, marking an important step in the implementation of hydrogen in the maritime passenger transport sector.
